Wilkesboro North Carolina is a favorite playground for outdoor enthusiasts as there are limitless outdoor opportunities. Wilkesboro is situated in the Yadkin Valley, which offers plenty of rafting and hiking prospects. Nearby Boone North Carolina is a great destination for outdoor exploration as well.

NC Hiking
Unique to Wilkesboro is the W. Kerr Scott Dam & Reservoir, a manmade lake which offers many opportunities for outdoor recreation in the Yadkin River Valley. The recreational facility offers seven boat launching ramps, four distinct swimming areas, camping and picnicking spots, as well as ideal hunting and fishing opportunities. For the convenience of guests, Graystone Manor Bed and Breakfast offers parking for both boats and RVs.

Stone Mountain State Park NC, located in Wilkes County, features a magnificent 600-foot granite dome. The Park covers more than 14,000 acres and offers more than 16 miles of trails. Scenic views are endless at Stone Mountain State Park because it is situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Hiking trails range in difficulty and length, suitable for novice and advanced hikers.

Grandfather Mountain, the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Mountains at 5,964 feet, is located in Linville North Carolina. Grandfather Mountain is privately owned and has been preserved as a nature center. The mountain features the mile-high swinging bridge, wildlife in their natural habitats, and magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. Grandfather Mountain also offers eleven hiking trails of varying difficulty that expose you to additional scenic views. The more than 12 miles of hiking trails are maintained and range from nature walks to exhausting backcountry challenges. Grandfather Mountains is a great tourist destination for the entire family.

Linville Gorge Wilderness, known as North Carolina’s Grand Canyon, is the third largest wilderness area in NC, and one of only two gorges in the Southeast. The gorge is located in the Pisgah National Forest and is comprised of more than 11,000 acres around the Linville River. Expert hikers looking for a challenge hike 1,400 feet below the ridge to the river that bisects the Gorge. Linville Gorge Wilderness features three main attractions: Linville Falls, Wiseman’s View, and the Linville Caverns. Linville Falls is fed by the Linville River, and has the highest volume of any waterfall on the northern edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Wiseman’s View offers hikers a magnificent interior view of the lush green Gorge, unmatched by any other outlook. Linville Caverns is the only limestone cavern open to the public.

Rafting
Wahoo’s Whitewater Rafting, located in Boone North Carolina, offers guests a thrill ride on the Nolichucky, Watauga, and New Rivers. Wahoo’s has been named the “Outfitter of the Year” by the Professional Paddlesports Association twice throughout its thirty-plus years of experience on the water. Wahoo’s is also the oldest original outfitter in the High County. Come explore the scenery of the Great Smoky Mountains through an exhilarating thrill ride down churning rapids. Wahoo’s also offers tubing, canoeing and caving.

High Mountain Expeditions offers rafting trips along the Nolichucky and Watauga Rivers and Wilson’s Creek. High Mountain Expeditions is located in Boone NC, just 40 minutes from Wilkesboro. The Nolichucky River features class III and IV rapids deep in an 11-mile gorge. Watauga River is the ideal river for families and children, because the rapids do not exceed class III. Wilson’s Creek features an 85 foot drop per mile making this river enjoyable on a raft or inflatable funyak. High Mountain Expeditions also offers caving for those who like to get a little dirty.
