NASCAR
North Carolina is truly the home of
NASCAR, with more than eighty percent of
NASCAR Racing Teams and related
industries located in the middle of it
all, the Piedmont region. There are a number of
tracks in North Carolina, making this state the home to
many motor sport
enthusiasts. North Wilkesboro Speedway
was the first track to feature uphill
and downhill stretches. Lowe’s Motor
Speedway, the largest track in North
Carolina, expects to open the NASCAR
Hall of Fame in 2010. Bristol Motor
Speedway, located in the Northwest
corner of Tennessee, is a NASCAR short
track constructed in 1960.
North Wilkesboro Speedway held races in
NASCAR’s top three series since NASCAR’s
inception in 1949. The speedway’s lack
of modern amenities and age forced its
closure in 1996, transferring its
Winston Cup events to New Hampshire
International Speedway and Texas Motor
Speedway. Since the speedway's closure
in 1996, more than a decade of motorsports has been lost. Attempts to
reopen the facility have been ongoing
since 2005. Efforts
made by many groups and individuals will
hopefully help to reopen the historic
speedway in the near future.
Lowe’s Motor Speedway, located in
Concord NC just north of Charlotte, was
the first racetrack in the country with
a corporate sponsor. The speedway is
considered the headquarters of NASCAR;
90% of NASCAR teams are based within 50
miles of the track. Lowe’s Motor
Speedway features a 1.5 mile, quad-oval
track that accommodates more than 200,000
fans, accounting for both infield
spectators and seated enthusiasts. The
speedway is known for a couple ‘firsts;’
the speedway was the first to host
Nighttime Superspeedway Racing Events in
1959. The track was also the first to
offer year-round residences in 1984,
after the construction of more than 50
condos located above turn one. Charlotte
is just a short drive from Wilkesboro.
Bristol Motor Speedway’s track is the
most steeply banked track used by
NASCAR, banking at an average of 26
degrees. Events at the raceway draw more
than 100,000 spectators, most of which
are from East Tennessee, while thousands pour
in from all parts of the country.
Tickets for races at the Speedway are
some of the most impossible to obtain in all of
sports, second only to the Opening
Ceremony of the Olympics. Bristol Motor
Speedway attracts spectators during the
off season by facilitating the Holiday
Lights Display that extends for several miles during the Christmas
Season.
